Using the wrong product on your hair system is one of the fastest ways to ruin it. The good news? Once you know what to look for, building the right product routine takes less than five minutes — and your system will thank you for months.

🧴

Shampoo — the foundation of your routine

Your shampoo choice has the single biggest impact on how long your hair system stays soft and natural-looking. The key rule: always go sulphate-free. Sulphates are the harsh detergents found in most standard shampoos — they're great for cleaning scalp oils from natural hair, but they strip moisture from hair system strands, leaving them dry, brittle, and prone to tangling.

Look for shampoos labelled "for colour-treated hair" or "moisturising" — these are typically sulphate-free and gentle enough for regular use on your system.

Sulphate-Free Moisturising Shampoo

Look for ingredients like argan oil, keratin, or coconut extract. These keep hair strands hydrated and smooth between washes.

✓ Best choice

Colour-Protect Shampoo

Designed to preserve hair colour — ideal for darker Indian hair tones. Prevents fading from UV exposure and washing.

✓ Great option

🚫 Products to avoid

  • Anti-dandruff shampoos (too harsh — contain zinc pyrithione which dries out hair fibres)

  • 2-in-1 shampoo + conditioner (conditioner residue clogs lace bases)

  • Clarifying shampoos (designed to strip — will damage your system fast)

India tip: During monsoon season or hot summers in cities like Pune and Mumbai, you may need to wash every 5–7 days due to sweat. Stick to the same gentle shampoo — just wash a little more often.

💧

Conditioner — never skip this step

Hair systems don't receive natural scalp oils the way your biological hair does. Conditioner is the only way to replace that moisture — making it non-negotiable after every single wash. Without it, hair becomes dry, tangled, and ages rapidly.

Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends only. Keep it away from the base — buildup near the roots weakens the adhesive bond and can cause lifting at the hairline.

Leave-In Conditioner Spray

A light daily spritz keeps hair hydrated between washes. Essential in dry weather or air-conditioned offices. Apply to damp or dry hair.

✓ Daily use

Deep Conditioning Mask

Use once a month for an intensive moisture boost. Apply after shampooing, leave for 10–15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

✓ Monthly treatment

Pro tip: A few drops of pure argan oil worked through the hair after washing acts as a brilliant natural conditioner — adds shine and keeps frizz down, perfect for India's humidity.

Adhesive & Tape — choose for your lifestyle

The adhesive you use determines how secure, how natural, and how comfortable your hair system feels day-to-day. There are two main types — tape and glue — and both have their place depending on your activity level, skin type, and how often you plan to remove the system.

Double-Sided Tape

Easiest to apply and remove at home. Ideal for beginners and active lifestyles. Look for "extended wear" tape if you sweat heavily. Lasts 1–2 weeks.

✓ Best for beginners

Waterproof Liquid Glue (Adhesive)

Stronger hold than tape — ideal for skin and poly bases. Apply a thin, even layer and allow to become tacky before pressing down. Lasts 2–4 weeks.

✓ Strongest hold

🚫 Never use these as substitutes

  • Regular craft glue or super glue — will destroy your base permanently

  • Hair gel or pomade as an adhesive — not strong enough and causes slippage

  • Expired adhesive — loses hold and can irritate sensitive skin

For Indian summers: Use a heat-resistant or sweat-proof tape formula — standard tapes can loosen significantly in 38°C+ temperatures. Ask us on WhatsApp which tape we recommend for your base type.

🧹

Adhesive Remover — the most underrated product

Most people focus on how to attach their system — but removing it safely is just as important. Yanking a hair system off without proper remover is one of the leading causes of base damage and premature hair loss from the system.

A good adhesive remover dissolves the bond gently, allowing you to peel the system away without stress on the base or your skin. Never rush this step.

Solvent-Based Remover (Liquid or Spray)

Fast-acting and effective. Apply around the perimeter, let it soak under the base for 30–60 seconds, then slowly lift. Safe for all base types.

✓ Most effective

Oil-Based Remover (Gentle Formula)

Slower acting but extra gentle — great for sensitive skin. Works well with tape. Can double as a base cleanser after the system is removed.

✓ Sensitive skin

Important: After removal, always clean all residue from the base before re-applying adhesive. Layering new tape or glue over old residue drastically reduces hold time and can damage the base material.

Styling Products — hold without harm

You can absolutely style your hair system — but product choice matters. Avoid anything with strong alcohol content (it dries out hair fibres) or heavy silicones (they cause buildup on the base and are hard to wash out).

The golden rule: use less than you think you need. Hair systems don't have the natural volume to carry heavy products well, and buildup shortens the lifespan faster than almost anything else.

Light-Hold Water-Based Pomade

Easy to wash out, no buildup. Gives a natural, defined finish. Perfect for classic Indian styles like side-part or comb-over looks.

✓ Best daily styler

Flexible Hold Hair Spray

Light mist for all-day hold without stiffness. Look for alcohol-free formulas. Use sparingly — 1–2 sprays from 20cm away.

✓ Finishing touch

Heat Protectant Spray

Non-negotiable before any blow dryer or straightener use. Coat hair lightly before heat styling to prevent cuticle damage.

✓ Essential with heat

Anti-Frizz Serum

A small pea-sized amount on the ends controls frizz in humid weather. Works as a light conditioner and adds shine.

✓ Great for monsoon

🚫 Styling products to avoid

  • Heavy waxes or oil-based pomades — near-impossible to fully wash out, cause rapid buildup

  • Dry shampoo — clogs lace and mono base pores, weakens adhesive over time

  • Strong-hold gels with alcohol — dry out hair strands and cause brittleness

  • Thick creams applied near the roots / base — breaks down adhesive bond

Scalp Care — the step most people forget

Healthy skin under your hair system means better adhesive performance, less irritation, and a more comfortable wear. Your scalp still sweats, produces oil, and needs to breathe — especially under a full base.

When your system is off for washing, take a few minutes to cleanse your scalp properly, keep the skin moisturised, and let it breathe for at least 30–60 minutes before re-attaching.

Gentle Scalp Cleanser

Use during system removal days. Removes adhesive residue, sweat, and product buildup from your scalp skin. Keeps skin healthy and adhesive-ready.

✓ Use on removal days

Lightweight Scalp Moisturiser

A non-greasy lotion or aloe vera gel applied after cleansing. Prevents dry skin and irritation — apply and let fully absorb before reattaching your system.

✓ Prevents irritation

Reminder: Let your scalp breathe completely before reattaching the system. Even 30 minutes of air exposure makes a real difference to skin health and adhesive grip.
