You've made the investment. Your hair system looks great, feels natural, and you're loving the confidence it gives you. But here's the truth: how long that lasts is almost entirely up to how well you maintain it. A well-cared-for hair system can look fresh for 6–12 months. A neglected one? Just weeks. The good news — proper care is simpler than most people think.

Wash it regularly — but gently.

Washing your hair system every 1–2 weeks is ideal for most wearers. In India's humid climate — especially during summer — you may need to wash it a little more frequently to prevent sweat buildup on the base.

Always use a sulphate-free, moisturising shampoo. Harsh shampoos strip the hair cuticle, causing the hair to dry out and tangle faster. Apply shampoo gently in a downward stroking motion — never scrub in circles, as this causes tangling and matting.

Pro tip: Rinse with cool or lukewarm water, never hot. Heat weakens both the hair strands and the base material over time.

Condition every single time — without fail.

Unlike your natural hair, the hair in your system doesn't receive oils from your scalp. That means moisture needs to come from an external source — which is exactly what conditioner does.

Apply a generous amount of conditioner after every wash, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. Leave it on for 3–5 minutes before rinsing. For extra care once a month, do a deep conditioning treatment or apply a small amount of argan oil to the hair after washing — it keeps the strands soft, shiny, and tangle-free.

Avoid the base: Keep conditioner away from the base of the system. Product buildup on the base weakens the adhesive bond and can cause lifting.

Detangle with patience, not force.

Tangling is one of the most common issues wearers face — and almost always the result of rushing. Never comb or brush your hair system when it's completely dry and knotted. This causes breakage and significantly shortens the lifespan of the hair.

Instead, spritz lightly with a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray, then work through tangles slowly using a wide-tooth comb. Always start from the ends and work your way up towards the roots — never the other way around.

For sleeping: Tie your hair in a loose braid or wear a silk sleep cap at night. This single habit dramatically reduces morning tangles.

Give heat styling a break.

Hair systems can absolutely be styled with heat — but unlike your natural hair, they can't repair themselves. Once the hair cuticle is damaged by excessive heat, it cannot regenerate.

Limit the use of straighteners and blow dryers to 2–3 times a week maximum. When you do use heat, always apply a heat protectant spray beforehand and keep tools below 180°C. Air-drying whenever possible is the single best thing you can do for your system's longevity.

India-specific tip: In cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai, the natural humidity means your hair will look great air-dried — no heat needed on most days.

Clean your base and refresh the bond.

The base of your hair system — whether it's lace, skin, or mono — needs regular cleaning to maintain a strong, secure bond. Adhesive residue, sweat, and oil accumulate over time and reduce the grip of your tape or glue.

When you remove your system for washing, clean the base thoroughly using a dedicated adhesive remover. Let it dry completely before re-applying adhesive. Never apply new tape or glue on top of old residue — this is one of the most common reasons hair systems start lifting at the edges prematurely.

Protect it from sun and sweat.

Extended exposure to direct sunlight causes hair colour to fade faster — particularly for darker shades common in Indian hair systems. If you spend time outdoors, wearing a light hat or cap goes a long way.

Heavy sweating — during workouts, summer afternoons, or long commutes — can also affect the adhesive bond. After sweating, pat the hairline gently with a dry cloth rather than rubbing, and plan your wash days accordingly around your activity schedule.

Bonus tip: A light UV-protection leave-in spray (used for coloured hair) works wonderfully on hair systems too, keeping the colour vibrant for longer.

Store it properly when not in use.

If you have a spare hair system or you're taking your system off for an extended period, storage matters more than most people realise. Never leave your system crumpled in a bag or tossed on a shelf.

Place it on a mannequin head or a folded towel, and store it away from direct sunlight and humidity. Keep it loosely covered with a breathable cloth — not a plastic bag, which traps moisture and can cause mildew on the base.
